For those who are not aware, Zinc is called the superstar nutrient for a reason.  It is needed by over 3000 enzymes in the body that are responsible for critical biochemical processes in the body. Zinc used to be naturally found in the soil, and we use to get our fix through the fruits and vegetables we ate. However, today, many farmlands are deficient in zinc, unless the farmer is consciously supplementing the soil, you need to supplement your diet with this nutrient too.

Below are highlighted a few signs that suggest you may be deficient in zinc:
– You are not as resistant to infection; you get frequent colds, cough, flu.
– You have a loss of appetite, and you experience an altered state of taste and smell.
– Low fertility.
– Your skin scars easily and is left with purple marks after breakouts or any skin trauma.
– You may have white spots on your fingernails.
– Blood glucose management is low.

If you experience these symptoms, it is vital that you speak with your health practitioner and change your diet to include foods that are
rich in zinc, like oysters, red meat, seeds (pumpkin and sunflower), eggs and lentils.

However, just not including foods that are rich in zinc with help. You have to help your body absorb this nutrient. Many factors restrict absorption, and it includes:
– Dairy and fibre intake that is high.
– If you take your meals with coffee and tea
– If you are already taking other supplements like folic acid, calcium or iron
– There may be substances out of your control, like those present in legumes, grains and seeds that may restrict zinc absorption.
– Using antacids
