Our minds are filled with hearsay about how saturated fat is the enemy and how cholesterol is the leading cause of heart disease. However, you should know that things are a little more complicated than that.

It is to be believed that saturated fat may not be the real enemy here when it comes to heart disease. There are a host of other factors that cause heart disease.

If you wish to prevent heart disease, it is essential that you include in your diet foods that are nutritious, you participate in regular exercise and stay away from habits such as excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

Instead of being afraid of it, dietary fats should be understood. It helps to give your body energy, it helps with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and is needed for the absorption of vitamins that are fat soluble. It also helps with hormone production and serves as a structural element for cell walls.

It is, however, important to remember that the right kind of fat needs to be consumed to achieve these benefits. When consumed from natural sources, it has some great benefits; however, when consumed in its refined form, it could be associated with cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

You cannot afford to cut fat out of your diet altogether, and therefore you have to look for alternative natural sources that you can cook with to keep healthy. Saturated fats that come from organic and grass-fed, milk, butter, cheese and all other dairy products are excellent. Pasture-raised eggs, coconut oil, coconuts, unsaturated fats from plant-based foods, olives, olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds, fish and omega 3 group foods such as chia seeds, flaxseeds, seafood and eggs.

Saturated fats such as ghee, butter, lard and coconut oil are best to cook with at home.
